QUESTIONS & SOLUTIONS WITH EXPLANATIONS
QUESTION 18. Gypsum is added during the manufacture of cement
(a) after grinding the clinker
(b) while mixing the raw materials
(c) during burning in the kiln
(d) at the beginning of grinding the clinker
Ans. (d) : Gypsum is added during the manufacture of cement after grinding the clinker.
- Gypsum is added to cement to reduce flash setting.
- After flash set, mixing is not allowed because no gain in strength development after mixing.
- Gypsum retards setting time
- Gypsum is usually mixed with clinker at the time of final grinding.
- Excess gypsum make cement unsound. So, Gypsum added to clinker should not be greater than 2.5-3%.
QUESTION 22. Which structure is more stable?
(a) indeterminate
(b) Determinate
(c) Both (a) and (b)
(d) None of the above
Ans. (b) : Determinate structure is more stable than indeterminate structure.
- A statically determinate structure is one that is stable and all unknown reactive forces can be determined from the equations.
- A statically indeterminate structure is one that is stable but contains more unknown forces than available equations of equilibrium.
QUESTION 32. “If an internal stress component like shear force, bending moment or reaction component is allowed to act through a small distance thereby causing deformation of the structure, the curve of the deformed shape represents to some scale, the influence line diagram for that stress or the reaction component.” The above statement is known as
(a) Maxwell’s theorem
(b) Macaulay’s theorem
(c) Muller-Breslau principle
(d) Castigliano’s theorem
Ans. (c) : Muller-Breslau principle
If an internal stress component like shear force, bending moment or reaction component shear force, bending moment or reaction component is allowed to act through a small distance thereby causing deformation of the structure, the curve of the deformed shape represents the same scale, the influence line diagram for that stress or the reaction component.
• This method is named after the German engineer the Heinrich. Muller-Breslau and it is one of the easiest way to draw the influence lines.
QUESTION 39. If t is the thickness of thinner plate in a bolted connection of tension member, pitch shall not be more than
(a) 12 t or 150 mm whichever is more
(b) 16 t or 200 mm whichever is less
(c) 16 t or 200 mm whichever is more
(d) 12 t or 150 mm whichever is less
Ans. (b) : As per IS 800: 2007, specification in bolting-
- minimum pitch = 2.5 d
- maximum pitch
- Tension member = minimum of (16t, 200 mm)
- Compression member = min. of (12t, 200 mm)
• When plates are used in tacking rivets-
- The tacking rivets are provided at a pitch in line should not more than 32 times the thickness or outside plate or 300 mm (whichever less)
- Where plates are exposed to weather, the pitch in line should not more than 16 times the thickness of the outside plate or 200 mm (whichever less).
QUESTION 50. Pick up the correct statement about the design of a slab of dimension 7 m × 3 m.
(a) Provide main reinforcement in 3 m direction and there is no need of distribution steel.
(b) Main reinforcement will be in the direction 7 m and distribution reinforcement in 3 m.
(c) Main reinforcement will be in 3 m direction and distribution in 7 m direction
(d) Provide main reinforcement in 7 m direction and there is no need of distribution steel.
Ans. (c) : Slab of dimension 7 m × 3 m
Main reinforcement will be in 3 m direction and distribution in 7 m direction.
• Main reinforcement provided along shorter span.
