QUESTIONS AND SOLVED ANSWERS/SOLUTIONS
Question 1: The transition curve used in the horizontal alignment of highways as per IRC recommendations
(a) lemniscate
(b) spiral
(c) cubic parabola
(d) parabola
Answer – B
I.R.C recommends the use of spiral curve in transition.
The length of the transition curve required may be calculated by Ls = 0.0215V3/CR
where C = 80/(75+V) [0.5 < C < 0.8]
“C” is 0.46 for speed above 100 km/h and 0.76 for speed less than 30 km/h. For speed between 100 and 30 km/h it is interpolated 0.46 and 0.76
Question 2 : Deflection can be controlled by using the appropriate
(a) aspect ratio
(b) modular ratio
(c) span/depth ratio
(d) water/cement ratio
Answer – C
Deflection can be controlled by using the appropriate span/depth ratio. Basic values of span to effective depth for spans up to 10 m.
Type of Beam | Span/Depth Ratio |
Cantilever beam | 7 |
Simply supported beam | 20 |
Continuous beam | 26 |
Question 3 : Excess of silica in brick earth result in
(a) cracking and warping of bricks
(b) loss of cohesion
(c) enhance the impermeability of bricks
(d) None of the above
Answer – B
- The excess of silica destroys the cohesion between particles and the bricks become brittle
- For good brick earth should contain about 50-60%
- It is added to reduce shrinkage while burning
- It thus imports a uniform shape to the bricks
Question 4 : For a saturated cohesive soil, a triaxial test yields the angle of material friction (ϕ) as zero. The conducted test is
(a) Consolidated Drained (CD) test
(b) Consolidated Undrained (CU) test
(c) Unconfined Compression (UC) test
(d) Unconsolidated Undrained (UU) test
Answer – D
- Drainage not permitted at any stage
- 5 to 10 minutes are required for whole test, thus called quick test
- Not suitable for sandy soil
- Suitable for cohesive soil
Question 5 : For a maximum horizontal range of a projectile, the angle of projection should be
(a) 30º
(b) 45º
(c) 60º
(d) 75º
Answer – B
When a particle is projected parabolically near the earth surface, it moves simultaneously in horizontal and vertical direction. This type of motion is called projectile motion.
